6th Annual Loudon County Habitat for Humanity Golf Tournament Re-Named to Honor Long-Time Volunteers

Tom_Walters-Editforweb

For the past 5 years, well over 100 golfers have come out to participate in the annual Loudon County Habitat for Humanity golf tournament and enjoy a fun day on the links while supporting a good cause. This year’s 6th annual tournament provides all of the same perks, with a new name!

The Larry and Marilyn Butcher Golf Tournament will be held at the Toqua Golf Course in Tellico Village on Friday, September 3rd. Larry Butcher served as an integral part to the Habitat golf tournament from its inception. From the recruitment of players to the addition of the “Stroke-Saver Yardstick,” Larry’s passion for golf was instrumental in operating a successful tournament. What many golfers may not have seen was his diligent work behind the scenes. Each and every year Larry took the lead in lining up sponsors to help make the tournament a successful event in providing money towards helping deserving families reach their goals of homeownership.

Marilyn was heavily involved in the operation of the Habitat Home Store. When her health limited her ability to volunteer regularly in the store, Marilyn simply shifted roles. She began recruiting and scheduling the many volunteers it requires to successfully operate the store. Marilyn’s interest has not stopped with the Home Store, either. Marilyn served on the Family Selection Committee and passionately worked to help identify families who would benefit from and could be successful in the Habitat program.

Larry passed away this year and Marilyn has since moved out of the area, but the golf tournament provides an excellent opportunity to honor their long-time commitment to Loudon County Habitat for Humanity.

The tournament will begin on the 3rd with a 9 a.m. start. Breakfast will be provided by volunteers beginning at 8 a.m. and lunch will be served directly after the tournament. The cost of this year’s tournament will be $100. Players with a TVPOA pre-paid golf round card can register for $75.

All of the proceeds raised at the tournament will go towards funding the cost of building a new home in partnership with a family in Loudon County. There are currently 10 partner families in the program working towards meeting their goal of homeownership. Their commitment requires them to put in more than 500 hours (for a 2-adult family) and to complete more than 6 months of homeowner preparation classes. All of these partner families will also save up to pay $1,100 in closing costs.

Sponsors and players supporting the golf tournament will be able to recognize the commitment that these homeowners are making, while honoring the long-time commitment of Larry and Marilyn Butcher.
